Where To Stay In The Philippines? Complete Guide

It can be a tedious job to research about hotels, hostels or where to stay in the Philippines in general. We got you covered. We've put together a guide on what to expect in Philippines accommodation, the accommodation costs, season, some tips and tricks we do when booking and our own personal picks on where to stay in Palawan, where to stay in Bohol, where to stay in Boracay, where to stay in Manila, where to stay in Siargao and where to stay in Siquijor.

The Philippines is a budding backpacker’s paradise perfect to be explored today. A proof is the influx of new and hip hostels opening all over the islands. It is after all the home of the most beautiful beaches in Southeast Asia.

The country however still remains to be a hidden gem as it is often overlooked by most travelers due to the fact that it isn’t connected to the rest of the region by land. The best places to stay in the Philippines are scattered throughout the country, tucked away on different islands, close to the beach, mountains, and city centers.

It has everything to any type of traveler. From the touristy instagrammable, accessible places like in the islands of Palawan and Boracay. To the areas that may need a bit more planning, such as the inhabited infamous remote islands in Leyte.

Yes, not all parts of the Philippines are easy breezy to travel but the inaccessible and difficult to reach remote islands make your holidays more special. Perfect for people who seek a “Cast Away” type of adventure

It’s a perfect combination of beautiful pristine beaches and wildlife, remote islands, lush mountains, rice terraces, world class caves, trekking areas and amazingly friendly people to enjoy relaxing days with. The Philippines is definitely a country worth discovering.

Read on as we share our personal recommendations of the best places to stay in the Philippines.

What to Expect on Different Types of Philippines Accommodations

The variety of accommodations in the Philippines is decent. From homestays in basic nipa huts to modern boutique hotels in buzzling cities, to luxury hotels, resorts, and villas in islands, there's something for everyone in the Philippines.

The basic ones includes cold water, windowless room with lightweight walls without either fan or air-con. The top end includes big-city Shangri-Las to high-end private island resorts where guests arrive by helicopter or float plane. And of course the vast majority of accommodation options are somewhere in mid range.

These range from ultra fancy tropical themed floating cottages to basic fan-cooled bungalows.

There are a wide variety of Bnb’s rental homes and apartments. Some went an extra mile for a unique experience thus making your stay comfortable and interesting.

Many cater to the domestic market, which means generic concrete construction and air-con. Five-star hotels in metros like Manila and Cebu are truly gorgeous though.

Sort of a catch-all term referring to less expensive, independently owned hotels. If you are not that picky and just want a bed to sleep, this would be fine.

Those that target foreign travellers tend to be more comfortable, with social areas and stylish decor, but also a bit more pricey than hostels primarily catering for young Filipinos travellers.

Accommodation Costs & Seasons

The following price ranges refers to a double room in the high season. Prices in touristy places like in Manila, Boracay and El Nido tend to be higher.

The number 1

Low

less than P1250
( < $25 usd )

The number 2

Midrange

P1250–P3500
( $25 usd -$70 usd )

The number 3

High

more than P3500
( > $70 usd )

How Far Can Your Money Go?

Within the budget category, rooms for less than P500 (US$10) are generally dorms or private fan-cooled rooms with a shared cold-water bathroom. Rooms between P700 (US$14) and P1000 (US$20) usually have a fan and private bathroom or sometimes if you get lucky it can already have air conditioning . Anything higher (and some within this range) should have both air-conditioning, a private bathroom and water heating.

Tips on How to Get Booking Discounts & Promo Rates

A few potential money-saving tips for booking hotels in the Philippines.

Promo Rates Hack

Especially during off-peak periods, hotels often offer ‘promo rates’ that they won’t tell you about unless you ask. So, always ask away especially when you are staying longer.

Walking-in Advise

In many resort areas, the ‘walk-in’ or with no reservation rate is substantially cheaper than the reservation rate. Conversely, in some hotels the reservation rate is actually cheaper than the walk-in rate.

Websites Booking Tip

Direct booking on a hotel’s website is more often than not cheaper than booking through online travel agencies.

Accommodation Booking Best Practices

Booking Ahead

As more and more Filipinos travel, it’s becoming more challenging to just walk in and find a place in the most popular resort areas and touristy spots during a peak period. Booking ahead is not a bad idea in the high season and is essential in ‘super peak’ periods. But if you prefer not, you will always find a place eventually.

About Booking Deposits

Many resorts, especially at the top end, require a deposit, often around 50% – 100% and if you cancel in less than two (2) weeks prior to arrival, it is usually non refundable. A few resorts still ask you to wire or direct-deposit the money into a Philippine bank account which sometimes can be troublesome, although posh resorts will allow credit-card deposits.

You always have an option to check another resort. Or if you consider just showing up without a reservation, make sure to call the resort a day before or on the day that you will show to make sure there are vacancies and make sure to have a fallback resort in mind just in case).

Fan vs Air-conditioning Trick

Some mid range places have two-tiered pricing for the same room. Even if not formally offered, you can say no to the “air-con” and request a fan for cheaper rates (not advisable on a summer day). They usually just don’t give you the air conditioning remote so that you can’t use it.

Listed below are our top choices and highly recommended places to stay around the Philippines.  Our top priority is the ambiance, unique experience, and since I work online all the time,  we always look for a good WiFi.

From fun hostels in party islands perfect to meet backpackers. To luxurious resorts perfect for peace, privacy and all about pampering yourselves. There’s always something that suits anyone’s travel style.

Final Thoughts

Accommodation in the Philippines is not as stylish as its neighboring countries such as Thailand and Indonesia since tourism is just budding in the country and competition is not that heavy. However, it is comfortable and anywhere you go, the people are very accommodating and friendly. One thing is for sure, you will be taken cared of anywhere you go.
